What is an Advanced Learner Loan?

The Advanced Learner Loan is a UK government initiative to support adult learners aged 19 and over. This scheme is specially designed to improve employability and foster high-level skills and knowledge. It supports learners pursuing Level 3 to Level 5 qualifications, including approved advanced learner loan courses online, to cover their tuition fees. However, it does not cover degrees or other higher education.

Advanced Learner Loan Eligibility Criteria

Are you eligible? To qualify for an Advanced Learner Loan, you must be aged 19 or over on the first day of your course, living in the UK, the Channel Islands, or the Isle of Man for three years immediately before this, and be studying with a publicly-funded college or training organisation in England. Enrolling on an eligible course at Level 3 to Level 6 is also required.

How to Apply for an Advanced Learner Loan

You can apply for an Advanced Learner Loan once you've received your 'Learning and Funding Information Letter' during your enrolment appointment at your chosen college or training organization. The application process is streamlined, and assistance is provided during enrolment to help you navigate it. Personal information and specifics about your course will be required for the application.

Understanding Advanced Learner Loan Amounts

The Skills Funding Agency determines the maximum loan amount for each qualification. The minimum you can borrow is £300. In some cases, if the cost of the course exceeds the maximum loan amount, you will be responsible for paying the shortfall. You can apply for up to 4 loans, and you can get more than one at the same time.
